Our programme Signpost to Skills was designed to tackle unemployment and underemployment in South Gloucestershire particularly among racialised groups. We worked closely with our cohort to equip them with the skills, confidence, networks and opportunities to secure employment, places in training programmes. From November 2022 to May 2023, we ran innovative in-person and online interventions which progressively prepared participants to be ready for the workforce through upskilling. The programme was generously funded by WECA’s Community Support Fund.

Participants reported positive changes such as improved confidence, reduced self-doubt, and took concrete actions aligned with their goals such as applying for jobs and courses, connecting with a mentor in their chosen industry, becoming active on LinkedIn and identifying events to network at. Other outcomes included having a new routine, making better use of community support structure and connections. By the end of the programme, all our participants had progressed and upskilled, with three setting up their own micro-businesses.
